I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, the oldest daughter of Jerry and Ina LaBarbera.  I have a younger sister and two younger brothers. I met my husband Chris and was married on April 29, 1978.  Chris struggled with lupus for many years. Under the stress of medical bills and hospitalization, I sought escape through substance abuse.
God got my attention one day in May of 1994 with a show about the end of the world. Little did I know that everyone at Grace Church (now Church @ the Rock) was praying for me to receive eternal life.  I called my sister, who was a member of Grace at the time, and asked her what the Bible said about the end of the world. She told me to read the Revelation of Jesus Christ and also the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.”
After extensive reading into God’s Word, I was convicted that I was on my way to hell. After repenting of my sins in October 1994 I accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Jesus delivered me from all the substance abuse.  I was baptized at Grace Church in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit on November 5th 1995.  After becoming saved I was thrilled to turn the burden of my husband’s sickness over to God. Chris eventually also accepted the free gift of eternal life.  After 22 years of marriage, Chris went to be with the Lord on November 5th 2000.
I began serving the Lord in Grace Church’s (now Church @ the Rock) Christian Education division, first by assisting in Pre K/K and then by teaching the 3rd and 4th grades.  After enjoying teaching for the Lord for 8 years, God set me in His service as the Director of Christian Education overseeing the infant nurseries up through Pre K/K and the girl’s classes 1st through 6th grades.  Even though I’ve never had children of my own, God has blessed me according to Psalm 113:9 “He grants the barren woman a home. Like the joyful mother of children.”
God has used the difficult experiences in my life to give me an understanding of women in desperate situations.  For this reason, I also counsel women, help them prepare for baptism, and lead a small group.
To God be the Glory!
